Enrofloxacin hydrochloride is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent from the fluoroquinolone group and is intended for veterinary use only. It has a wide range of antimicrobial action against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and microorganisms. It acts bactericidally in very low concentrations by inhibiting the activity of bacterial DNA Gyrase (subunit A of topoisomerase II). Resistance to Enrofloxacin builds up slowly and is chromosome-type, not plasmid-mediated. It has a long-lasting post-antibiotic effect. It is rapidly and highly absorbed from the digestive tract and distributed in all organs, tissues, and body fluids. It is poorly metabolised and excreted mainly in urine and bile. There is no cross-resistance with chemotherapeutics from other chemical groups. It does not show cumulative properties.
Contraindications: Not to be used in pregnant and lactating bitches and cats, as well as in young dogs less than 8 months in small breeds, less than 12 months in medium breeds, and less than 18 months in large breeds of dogs. Do not give to birds whose eggs are subject to human consumption.
